and then there are egyptian hierloglyphs. some people will say they're open, some will say closed. here's the unicode block's wikipedia page. i personally wouldn't use them, but it's up to you EGYPTIAN HIERLOGLYPHICS

what are open/closed symbols?

closed symbols are language symbols from cultures that are not open to outsiders, depending on the culture. you should avoid using these symbols unless they're from YOUR culture. you shouldn't use language symbols as an aesthetic, it can come across as incredibly disrespectful. open symbols are the opposite, they're just unicode that aren't tied to any languages / cultures, thus they're open for anyone to use for any purposes!

why did you make this?

i've seen a ton of carrds and other resources that have lists of open symbols, but... i've always found them to be incredibly lacking. i made this resource for myself, but i think many others could benefit from it! especially those folk who never really understood how to find these symbols.

where did you find all these symbols?

wikipedia codeblocks. you can just search codeblock names, go to the wiki, and look at the codeblock, it's incredibly accessible.

how can i check if i'm using closed symbols?

you can individually search through codeblocks like a maniac, or you can use a unicode inspector. the one i use is linked here. you put your symbols in, and you check what block they're from. if you do this a ton, you'll recognize the names overtime and won't need to look it up. but if you don't, look up that unicode block and see if it originates from any culture or language. wikipedia usually provides pretty solid answers for this. if you're UNSURE, don't use that symbol.

disclaimer:

i am white, entirely cultureless, so please PLEASE let me know if i did accidentally include any closed symbols here / need to change the wording of anything! i absolutely do not want to spread misinformation, so help me out if you can! you can contact me on discord @amieshmamie
