Sarah Rhee 리여린 (Ri Yerin)

Sarah's spent her whole life moving around: first Seoul, then Norfolk, then Singapore, and now Kageoka, with a dozen brief diversions scattered in between: Dubai, Geneva, Hong Kong, even a few memorable months in Mumbai and Nairobi. Her parents are from a subsidiary branch of a massive chaebol which owns a sizable chunk of the Korean economy. They're not as wealthy as the main line, but they're comfortable.

Sarah is a dilettante. She's somewhere in the 90th percentile as far as her grades go, but she hasn't made it her whole personality. She can play the piano and sketch a sunset, but that's only for fun. She likes to think she's a good person, but she's not about to rush into oncoming traffic to shove a small child out of a truck's path. A casual analysis of Higan's student population would categorize her as a member of the silent majority: not too smart, not too adversarial, not too weird, not too popular. If asked, her classmates would describe her as "that cute girl in the corner who lent me her pen once". Distant but pleasant. She's in her fair share of friend groups, but doesn't have anyone in Kageoka whom she's particularly close to.

So there's probably a deep, dark secret buried somewhere underneath all that, right? A mad whirlwind of malice, violence, delusion, trauma. A dead sibling. A brush with death. An all-consuming obsession kept under wraps. Actually, no. Sarah is exactly representative of the wider student body. She's a normie, utterly incapable of Awakening, let alone bonding with an entity from the other side. Anyway, she's only going to be here for a few years. When her family moves, that's it. Goodbye, Kageoka.

Lately, though, she's started seeing things. Faces in the clouds. Strange silhouettes in the shadows. She hasn't brought her hallucinations up to her parents, not yet, but she's thinking about it.

Because the problem is, while she's uninterested in the secret war being waged for the soul of Kageoka... the secret war being waged for the soul of Kageoka is interested in her.
