A Taxonomy of Wild Pokemon

Partner-seekers

  • Pokemon that actively seek out humans to partner with
  • Identified by an extreme willingness to be around and interact with humans
  • Often either very docile or very excitable
  • May be seeking a trainer to grow stronger with or an owner to give them the kind of safety that only human society can provide
  • May be capable of a limited form of the kind of communication domestic Pokemon can use with humans depending on their level of exposure to human society
  • May still be selective about the kinds of humans they’re willing to partner with based on their own needs. No proud and brave Riolu wants to live their life in a lady’s purse

Hunters

  • Pokemon who will approach humans with aggressive posture but will only attack other Pokemon
  • Usually these Pokemon are seeking a challenge to test their strength or grow
  • They may make some kind of “come and get me!” display before running off, to goad the human into chasing them
  • Frequently willing to partner with humans capable of subduing them in battle or tracking them as they flee

Threats

  • Pokemon who move aggressively in human areas and attack humans, property, or unwilling domestic Pokemon
  • Though most are sympathetic to the lives of wild Pokemon, most also believe the safety of human civilization comes first
  • Known threats will typically be subdued by local authorities, Rangers, or their proxies and re-habitated away from civilization or incarcerated
  • While it is legal to capture a threat, trainers are advised to turn them in to the authorities immediately. A healthy Pokemon can leave their ball at any time and any damage caused by a Pokemon is its trainer’s responsibility

Hiders

  • Pokemon who avoid human contact as much as possible and resist partnership
  • These Pokemon flee humans and domestic Pokemon without display and will break out of Pokeballs until fainted
  • Any Pokemon that continues to run after escaping the first Pokeball is considered a hider
  • Any fainted Pokemon is considered a hider unless they posed a threat to human civilization while conscious
  • Attempting to catch a hider is illegal. Even ineffectively chasing a hider is a misdemeanor in most jurisdictions
  • Still, criminal organizations, poachers, and unscrupulous trainers pose a threat to these populations, especially when the Pokemon in question is rare, special, or considered mystical in some way

Ferals

  • Do not possess higher-order thought
  • Clearly identifiable [how?]
  • Can be hunted like real-life animals
  • Cannot be domesticated
