Rentry about Rhodeia...because I love her ♡
Hello, Hello! My name is Xia, and welcome to my rentry in which I will proceed to infodump about a boss that most people probably do not know the lore of: Rhodeia of Loch! I adore Rhodeia (my wife, real!) so I decided to make this rentry just to ramble about and infodump about the one I love !
Lochfolk History
First of all! Rhodeia is not the only one of her species, also known as the Lochfolk or Oceanids! They all appear to go by she/her pronouns (or at least the ones we have seen so far do). The Lochfolk all originate from Fontaine, and they were spies for the old Hydro Archon. However, she did not have ill intent! She merely wanted everyone to be connected the same way water is...
Unfortunately, the previous Hydro Archon died and was replaced by the current Hydro Archon, the God of Justice (also known as Focalors). The Lochfolk did not approve of or like Focalors, so many went on a self imposed exile from Fontaine, and they are said to be carrying the "fragments of a long dead god," presumably the previous Hydro Archon.
Lochfolk's Abilities
The Lochfolk are very tied to water, as they are born from and made out of water. They can control water (such as when Rhodeia creates her hydro mimics in her fight!), but they are tied to the water. The water's health directly affects them. Lochfolk are also capable of making water sweet (like the Spring Fairy does) or bitter (like Rhodeia does in the Wishful Drops event).
Another way they are tied to the water is the fact that they can absorb knowledge through the water. They learn through joining with water sources, from the typical spring water or rivers to sources that one wouldn't typically think of, such as a person's tears. One of the best sources they can join would be a water creation by another Lochfolk.
Speaking of other Lochfolk, they can also join with each other! They actually prefer to travel that way, as it feels lonely traveling alone... however! It is possible for a Lochfolk with malicious intent to forcibly join another and destroy their sense of self — assassination, if you will. The Lochfolk fear falling in love with humans, as they cannot join with them without drowning them...
Another ability that the Lochfolk have is the ability to float in the air! As far as I know, this doesn't really tie into their lore too much; it's just a fun little detail! Rhodeia actually does this in her fight; it's like she's swimming in the air! (She's so pretty... )
Rhodeia's Lore
Rhodeia was one of the Lochfolk who left Fontaine and also one of the most powerful Lochfolk. She currently resides in Bishui Plain, next to Wuwang Hill. She only attacks when provoked, as she fears that the Traveler is an assassin sent by Fontaine to kill her. Rhodeia is paranoid, and it is illustrated in the Wishful Drops event, as the whole plot of the event is started when she (accidentally) makes Liyue and Mondstadt's water bitter due to her feelings of hatred towards Endora, who she believed was an assassin. However, they eventually do talk it out, and Rhodeia does fix the waters of Liyue and Mondstadt. She also comes to understand Endora's intentions. Endora did not want to harm her; rather, she admired Rhodeia.
A something I noticed as well... Rhodeia is the only normal boss in the game where her fight does not start on proximity. For example, the Pyro Regisvine's fight will start when the player attacks first OR even just approaches. That is how all of the normal boss fights work... except for Rhodeia's. This is likely just a gameplay feature, as the player typically swims to her arena, which uses up quite a bit of stamina. However! This fits in with her lore quite well! This may just be speculation, but... it seems that one would have to provoke Rhodeia to fight her. I do not believe that she would attack anyone who didn't provoke her (While, yes, she did embitter the water because of her fear of Endora, her abilites are tied to her emotions. It was likely an accident!). Just a little food for thought!
Conclusion
Hello! If you have read the way to this point, then thank you! Thank you for reading my infodumping on Rhodeia... I adore her so much! I love talking and thinking all about her
I love Rhodeia; the takeaway here is that gay neurodivergent people can and WILL make a whole rentry essay about their wife!
