Basic Knowledge
Brief rundown on the quest's "mechanics" (or lack thereof):
- Rolls happen whenever the QM feels them necessary, with two exceptions: when entering a new area and rolling for Pokémon encounters, during which a d50+ (depending on the encounter table) is rolled, and when attempting to acquire a new Pokémon (during which a d510 is rolled, unless there is a status effect applied in which case a d385 or d255 (if asleep) is rolled). Both are roll-under.
- As of 3/19/2025, combat is also given a general d100 roll for any attempted action. This might be rolled back if it ends up being more annoying than cool, but for now that's the case.
- Any skill checks outside of acquiring new teammates or combat-related actions will be done with one d100 per reply, Best of Three rules. Typically denoted when making a choice, but sometimes QM forgets and has to ask afterwards.
- Mainline game mechanics (levels, IVs, etc.) are extreme abstractions. Pokémon can learn as many moves as they'd like to so long as they rule-of-cool or train it hard enough, levels aren't concrete, evolutions depend more on environmental factors or momentous progressions in life than on shiny stones or certain items.
- Movesets will generally follow in-game power scaling (eg a Pikachu won't be learning Thunder before Thunder Shock) but linear progression (Thunder Wave, then Double Team, then Electro Ball) won't exist.
- Catch + shiny rates are the only 1-to-1 translations in this quest and are both done with dice. Shiny rolls are done behind the scenes to reduce clutter.
- Write-ins are greatly encouraged by both the QM and the quest's regular audience.
- There are three different types of stats, two of which are exclusive to the protagonist, which add various modifiers to rolls.
- Combat is a general stat, exclusive to individual non-human party members, that applies whenever a party member attempts to attack. This can be raised through training to a high of +90 to any related rolls. Rolls related to it will be behind-the-scenes, but the stat itself will be disclosed the first time a party member is mentioned in a fight.
- Command relates to how synchronized Walter is with his party members-- whether his commands will be understood, how exactly they'll be understood, and generally how his party respects him. It can be raised through training to a high of +90 to any related rolls. I'll try to roll this one within the thread for the sake of suspense, but that's subject to change as I'm not sure dice would fit this stat as well as the other two.
- Catching only matters when acquiring a new party member. It's self-explanatory, and can be raised to a high of +120 through studying neofauna. Since there aren't varying tiers of pokeballs in the quest, training this might be essential for catching some stronger Pokémon later down the line. This stat will be rolled within the thread as all catching rolls so far have been. By far the least likely stat for me to remove, I don't really feel it fair to keep the players stuck on pokeball odds when trying to catch cooler monsters.
- You can check all of these stats in the Current Affairs pastebin.
- TL;DR: super mechanics-light. Don't worry about rolls or stat autism, it'll all be divulged ahead of time, just chill and enjoy the colorful Victorian apocalypse.
