It's a tree, which can match the size to the user, who find it surprisingly wieldy and good at hitting stuff. Its branches can be torn off and used as a thrown weapon, regrow quickly, and also grow mid-throw.
Backstory
Iwao Iwaishi is a son of the Moon Village's stonemason Ishiku Iwaishi, although given the way Iwao looks and the fact that no one has ever seen his mother, some suspect that he's, in fact, a golem or some other type of construct his "father" crafted. He's supposedly 10 years old, but the villagers, other than his father, first seen him only five years ago.
Accusations of not even really being human, combined Iwao's admittedly limited mental faculties, didn't endorse proper socializing for the kid growing up. However, due to his natural physical strength, and his father's insistence, he has been admitted to the Ninja Academy. Some say it was because it's already a gathering of weirdos, but Iwao's father hopes his son will be able to make some friends there and learn something useful.
Personality
Iwao's as sharp as he looks, which is not at all. He speaks very slowly, and has a tendency to drift off-topic, distracted by whatever catches his fancy. When not given any specific tasks, he also moves slow, often not at all. It's not unusual for him to be mistaken for a boulder when he spends hours without moving.
Iwao likes animals, in particular birds. They fascinate him with their ability to fly and how small and light they are. The birds like him too, often using him as a perch. He likes nature in general, carrying his favourite tree everywhere he goes. He says it's magical. His other hobbies include eating dirt, skipping stones, collecting pretty stones, and drawing.
Iwao never had friends, and he's looking to make some in the Academy. He's even willing to share his favourite stones with them. His lack of experience in this matter, will probably make this even more difficult and awkward for him, but he wants to put in the effort and try. One of the obstacles, might be his inability to properly control his strength when expressing his physical affection. He should be able to learn that fairly quickly, he hasn't hurt a bird in years (he still feels bad about the last one).
Abilities
Iwao is slow and dull, but he's also really, really strong and durable. He doesn't like fighting, and might try to avoid it by pretending to be a rock or burrowing underground, but if it came to it his plan is as simple as it is effective. He can tank through the enemy's attacks and answer them with a massive strike of his own, either with his stone hands or with his tree. If he's too far, he'll throw rocks, trees, summoned boulders or tree branches. In a desperate situation, he can even summon a small avalanche.
