The Economy of the Serene Republic

Preface

The economy of the Serene Republic is highly defined by its lack of natural resources. The locals have adapted to this lack by adopting philosophies and policies that promote high efficiency, recycling, and "Quality over Quantity" mindset for manufacturing products.

The Serene Republic operates with a trade deficit for raw resources: The nation imports more raw resources than she exports them. What the nation exports in great quantities are manufactured and luxury goods, as well as services and human resources usually in the form of skilled workforce.

Below is the economy of the Serene Republic, divided into the primary, secondary, and tertiary sectors. At the end of this document will be a compiled list of the goods and services that can be found on the nasfaqgian markets.

The Territorial Divisions of the Republic

The Serene Republic is divided into five (5) areas that are distinguished from each other not by governance, or culture, but by what sort of economic activities are most prominent there and how developed these areas are. From the vast plantations cut into the barely tamed monsoon rainforests of the Four Coins Archipelago, the deep pit mines of the Heartflow coast, the cozy fishing villages that dot the coniferous islands of the Southern Territories, the herds of sheep and cattle that graze the sun-kissed grasslands of the Northern Territories, and the endless fields of grain and tubers that feed the industrial metropolises of the Home Island, the Serene Republic is home to a vast variety of different environments and economic activities. The differences between these areas do for the most part not come from climatological variety, but are instead born from millennia of human activity slowly shaping each area to suit the purpose it was given by the blind hand of the market.

The seas that immediately surround the republic have also been divided into six (6) distinct areas based on their geographic location and local environment. These areas are the Ailivian Sea to the far north extending all the way to the Ailivian Continent, the Trade Sea to the north-west extending all the way to lands of savage cannibals, the Nasfaqgian Sea bordering the Agnami Caliphate and through which most of the trade lanes pass, the polluted Gambler's Way and Heartflow straits that surround the Home Island on her both flanks, and the Golden Sea shared by the Serene Republic and the many exotic realms of the Anykarian Continent to the south and south-east.

Zones of the Serene Republic The Territorial Divisions of the Serene Republic

sas

The Primary Sector

The primary sector is concerned with the extraction of natural resources through farming, logging, fishing, and mining. The Serene Republic's primary sector struggles to meet the ever-increasing demands of her far more developed secondary sector, which has forced the citizenry of the Serene Republic to reach out to foreign nations in order to seek the resources and foodstuffs they need.

Fishing & Aquaculture

Fishing and aquaculture are an important part of the Serene Republic's food economy. Seafood and other edibles derived from the sea, rivers, and lakes of the Serene Republic form a considerable portion of the diets of the average citizen.

Ailivian Sea
The Ailivian sea borders the Four Coins Archipelago. The area is affected by a mildly cold ocean current. The area is sparsely populated, but some settlements do practice fishing here, and the area is a base for the majority of the Serene Republic whaling operations. Among the sealife caught and collected in this territory are, in a rough order of significance:

Mammals:

Trade Sea
The Trade sea is affected by mostly neutral water currents, but it is generally cooler than the Ailivian Sea. The two seas have similar species, but the Trade Sea also includes some species that live in shallower waters and near coasts. The Trade Sea is extensively fished by the populations of the Northern Territories, and is together with Nasfaqgian Sea the source of the majority of the fish and sealife sold to the Nasfaqgian Markets.
Among the sealife caught and collected in this territory are, in a rough order of significance:

Mammals:

Ailivian Right Whale (Meat, Oil, Bone, Baleen), Ailivian Humback Whale (Meat, Oil, Bone, Baleen), Sail Whale (Meat, Oil, Bone, Baleen), Common Ram Whale (Meat, Oil, Ambergris), Ailivian Dolphin (Meat, Bone), Ailivian Kawaiorca (Meat, Oil),

Gambler's Way and Heartflow Strait
The Gambler's Way and Hearflow Strait are heavily overfished by the populations of the Home Island and Heartflow Coast. Much of the waste producted by mining and industry find their way into these straits, which together with the aforementioned overfishing has led to a severe reduction in biodiversity and volume of existing populations. Among the sealife caught and collected in this territory are, in a rough order of significance:

Mammals:

Ailivian Dolphin (Meat, Bone), Golden Sea Dolphin (Meat, Bone),

Fish:

Anchovy (Meat), Sardine (Meat), Flowfish (Meat), Salmon (Meat), Mullet (Meat), Turbot (Meat),

Other:

Sea Urchin ("Roe"), Sponges (Used for various purposes), Sea Cucumber (Meat),

Golden Sea
The Golden Sea is far colder than the three northern seas exploited by the Serene Republic, and is home to different species, although nearby the coasts of the Gambler's Way and Heartflow Strait some of the species native to those areas can still be found. The Golden Sea is, like the Trade Sea and the Nasfaqgian Sea, an important source of fish and sealife for the nation. As the population in the Southern Territories is rather low by the local standard, much of their catch ends up being sold to the denizens of the Home Island and Heartflow Coast. Among the sealife caught and collected in this territory are, in a rough order of significance:

Mammals:

Golden Sea Dolphin (Meat, Bone),

Sea Urchin ("Roe"), Sponges (Used for various purposes), Sea Cucumber (Meat),

Freshwater
The rivers, canals, and lakes of the Northern Territories, Home Island, and Hearflow Coast are also home to many unique freshwater species that are naturally exploited by the locals. Some of these species are highly valued as delicacies. Among the sealife caught and collected in this territory are, in a rough order of significance:

Fish:

Nasfagian Freshwater Eel (Meat), Salmon (Meat, Roe), Sturgeon (Meat, Roe), Heartflow Lamprey (Meat), Pike (Meat),

Forestry & Logging

SAAAAAAAS

Four Coins Archipelago
The Four Coind Archipelago is a home to many tropical species both domestic and foreign. The territory has large areas of unused and wild forest that are frequently cut down into lumber where they are not being exploited for the hard to cultivate resources located there. This area has a high biodiversity, of which only few species are exploited on a commercial scale.
Among others, the following types of tree-sourced resources are grown or collected here, in a rough order of significance:

Lumber:

Teak, Mahogany, Sandalwood, Balsa, Greenheart, Rosewood, Amaranth Wood, Rubberwood,

Sap:

Rubber, Storax Resin,

Other:

Sandalwood Oil, Agarwood,

Northern Territories
The Northern Territories is one of the few areas where large forests still exist in the Serene Republic, although these forests aren't often wild and are instead managed by various entities, both corporate and individual in nature. Wild forests do exist, but they are rare, and mostly located on the islands of the Northern Territories. As such the biodiversity in this area is much lower than it is in the Four Coins Archipelago, Heartflow Coast, or Southern Territories. Many of the species of trees grown in this area are foreign.
Among others, the following types of tree-sourced resources are grown or collected here, in a rough order of significance:

Lumber:

Maple, Oak, Sandalwood, Alder, Mahogany, Apple, Pecan, Pear,

Other:

Sandalwood Oil, Tanbark (Alder, Oak), Dye (Red, Yellow),

Home Island
The only large forests left in the Home Island are located in the sparsely populated Idelshire. Elsewhere on the Home Island trees are found in small and carefully managed commercial forests, private forest used for hunting and leisure, private orchards, or in areas where the ownership of the land the tree sits on is nebulous or unknown. These areas tend to be small, and have very low biodiversity. Nonetheless, the Home Island is still an important source of many tree-derived resources for the nation.
Among others, the following types of tree-sourced resources are grown or collected here, in a rough order of significance:

Lumber:

Oak, Maple, Cedar, Walnut, Ash, Spruce, Apple, Chestnut, Hickory, Pecan, Pear, Alder, Cypress, Juniper,

Sap:

Spruce Resin,

Other:

Cedarwood Oil, Tanbark (Oak, Alder, Chestnut, Oak), Cork, Dye (Red, Yellow, Black),

Heartflow Coast
Despite the Heartflow Coast being the second most developed and second most populated area of the Republic, areas of wild and semi-wild forest still exist in this area, concentrated on the hilly and mountainous terrain leading to the Daybreak Mountains on /ahoy/'s side of the border where human settlements are small and sparse. These forests are usually a mixture of coniferous and deciduous trees, and they have a high biodiversity. Besides mining and farming, logging and log-driving is an important part of the local economy.
Among others, the following types of tree-sourced resources are grown or collected here, in a rough order of significance:

Lumber:

Pine, Oak, Maple, Walnut, Cedar, Cherry, Ash, Spruce, Elm, Alder, Hickory, Apple, Chestnut, Pear, Willow, Beech, Cypress, Juniper,

Sap:

Pine Resin, Spruce Resin,

Other:

Pine Tar, Tanbark (Oak, Alder, Chestnut), Cedarwood Oil, Cork, Dye (Red, Yellow, Bistre, Black),

Southern Territories
The Southern Territories have the most natural biodiversity when it comes to trees anywhere in the Serene Republic, except for the Four Coins Archipelago. As the area is sparsely populated, undeveloped, and as most of the population living in the area eat mostly fish, the forests of the Southern Territories are still large and wild, for the most part. As such, the area has become an important location for the Nasfaqgian logging and forestry industries.
Among others, the following types of tree-sourced resources are grown or collected here, in a rough order of significance:

Lumber:

Pine, Birch, Oak, Spruce, Ash, Hickory, Walnut, Elm, Alder, Chestnut, Willow, Apple, Cherry, Beech,

Sap:

Birch Sap, Pine Resin, Spruce Resin,

Other:

Pine Tar, Birch Tar, Tanbark (Birch, Alder, Chestnut), Cork, Dye (Red, Yellow, Bistre, Black),

Hunting & Gathering

SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS

Four Coins Archipelago
As an area with high biodiversity, the Four Coins Archipelago is a source of uncountable number of herbs, medicinal plants, pretty flowers, and animals each more exotic than the next. Only a small portion of this biodiversity is being exploited by foraging or hunting on a commercial scale.
Among others, the following resources are collected by hunting, trapping, or foraging in this area, in a rough order of significance:

Food:

Game meat (Tropical bird, Turtle, Primate),

Raw resources:

Leather, Fur, Feathers, Bone,

Other:

Medicinal Plants, Wild Flowers, Medicinal Fungi, Exotic Pets (Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians, Mammals, Insects), Poisonous Organic Compounds,

Northern Territories
Any large animals, especially large predators, have long since been hunted to extinction in this area, leaving only small and medium game for hunters and trappers to exploit. The plants and fungi are also low in diversity in this area, but those that do exist are relatively abundant, providing the rural populations of the area with a nice source of additional food and income. One can still make a living with hunting, trapping and/or foraging in this area, and many do exactly that. Due to this, the Northern Territories are home to some of the best riflemen in the Serene Republic.
Among others, the following resources are collected by hunting, trapping, or foraging in this area, in a rough order of significance:

Food:

Fungi (Chantarelle, Porcini, Black Trumpet, Blewit),
Game meat (Mallard, Pheasant, Pigeon, Quail, Fox, Hare, Deer),
Truffle (Summer Truffle),

Raw resources:

Leather, Fur, Feathers, Bone,

Other:

Wild Flowers, Poisonous Organic Compounds,

Home Island
Hunting in the Home Island is a sport and not an occupation. No large animals exist here in commercially significant numbers, and only a handful are willing to try to earn their living by hunting small game. The Home Island was once the home of the Nasfaqgian Wolf, but the species has been hunted to extinction centuries ago, although rumors of a few wolves still living deep in the swampy forests of Idelshire do exist. Fungi, especially truffles some of which are being grown in private truffle orchards, are a far more economically significant in this area. The Home Island produces the second highest amount of truffles in the nation, after the Heartflow Coast. The most valuable resource that can be found by foraging in the Home Island is Bogwood, also known as abonos or morta, which is highly priced among woodcarvers and jewelers.
Among others, the following resources are collected by hunting, trapping, or foraging in this area, in a rough order of significance:

Food:

Truffle (White Truffle, Black Truffle, Summer Truffle),
Fungi (Chantarelle, Morels, Porcini, Black Trumpet, King trumpet mushroom, Phoenix mushroom, Blewit, Saffron milk cap),
Game meat (Mallard, Pheasant, Hare, Pigeon, Deer, Fox, Quail),

Raw resources:

Bogwood, Fur, Leather, Feathers,

Other:

Wild Flowers, Poisonous Organic Compounds,

Heartflow Coast
The Heartflow Coast as an area with vast natural forests is home to some larger species of animals that have already disappeared from many of the other territories of the republic, and as such many of the independent loggers and miners of the eastern parts of the territory earn a significant part of their income through hunting for these animals, as well as foraging for the other treasures found in the area: The Heartflow Coast produces the most truffles in the entire nation, and valuable bogwood can be found in swamplands. The Heartflow Coast is home to many falconers, whose birds and services are often sold to wealthy Valt living in the Home Island or the more populated areas of the Heartflow Coast.
Among others, the following resources are collected by hunting, trapping, or foraging in this area, in a rough order of significance:

Food:

Fungi (Chantarelle, Morels, King trumpet mushroom, Phoenix mushroom, Saffron milk cap, Gyromitra esculenta, Blewit),
Truffle (Black Truffle, White Truffle, Summer Truffle),
Game meat (Mallard, Pheasant, Boar, Deer, Fox, Bear, Hare, Pigeon, Quail),

Raw resources:

Leather, Fur, Feathers, Bogwood, Bone,

Other:

Wild Flowers, Amadou, Various herbs and medicinal plants, Pets (Birds of Prey), Poisonous Organic Compounds,

Southern Territories
The Southern Territories are the best place in the Serene Republic for hunting, foraging, and enjoying nature. The forests in the area are older, larger, and wilder than those found elsewhere, except maybe in the Four Coins Archipelago. A large minority of those that hunt in the area are not locals, but instead hunters and trappers from other parts of the Serene Republic who have come to the Southern Territories not to earn a living, but to experience nature and hunt for sport. The locals have a strong hunting culture, and it is in the Southern Territories where one can find some of the best riflemen in the entire republic.
Among others, the following resources are collected by hunting, trapping, or foraging in this area, in a rough order of significance:

Food:

Game meat (Mallard, Boar, Deer, Bear, Fox, Hare, Pigeon, Pheasant, Quail),
Fungi (Morels, Chantarelle, Porcini, King trumpet mushroom, Phoenix mushroom, Saffron milk cap, Gyromitra esculenta, Blewit),
Truffle (Black Truffle, Summer Truffle),

Four Coins Archipelago
The Four Coins Archipelago is comprised of a mixture of igneous felsic and intermediary extrusive rock.
The four Coins Archipelago is home to some mining with the focus being mostly on the extraction of the precious stones found in the area, of which Topaz, Obsidian, and Garnet are the most significant ones. Jasper, Zircon, various quartz stones, and chalcedonies like Bloodstone are also found in the area, but are economically less significant. Diamonds are occasionally found in the area, but they tend to be small and low quality ones unfit for other than industrial use. Gem quality diamonds with high chuubanitic content found in the area are highly valued in the domestic market despite their small size.

The Northern Territories are mined mostly for Cinnabar, Halite, and Chuubanitic minerals, with the Hatter's Island being the single most important source of mercury in the entire Serene Republic. Gold is sometimes found in eluvial placer deposits, all across the area, but these deposits tend to be very poor and usually not worth industrial mining operations. Iron in the form of magnetite is found everywhere in the area, but most significantly in Northaven.
The only precious stones that are found in the area are quartz stones (namely amethyst, rose quartz and tiger's eye) and some chalcedonies, as well as garnets.
There exists a significant aquifer beneath Northaven and Lird's Wallet Island.

There exists a significant carbonate-hosted lead-zinc ore deposit on the home island which has been mined by the locals for millenia. Some iron and copper deposits are also found on the home island, mostly in intrusive rock, where small amounts of gold and silver are also occasionally found. It is rumored that beneath the capital exists an incredibly rich gold deposit, but prospecting for and mining of precious minerals in the area has been forbidden by the Dev Council.
The Home Island is poor in precious and semi-precious stones, with only some inexpensive quartz stones, some chalcedonies, malachite, and lazurite being found.
In addition to the above, coal, peat, chuubanitic minerals, construction material, and various industrial minerals are mined from the Home Island in great quantities.

Southern Territories
The Southern Territories are an old, inactive orogeny, comprised mostly of metamorphic felsic rocks with some felsic igneous intrusive rocks.
The Southern Territories are mostly mined for copper, iron, tin, and various precious stones, of which the most significant ones are topaz, aquamarine, and beryl. Granite is quarried in significant quantities and shipped to the rest of the Serene Republic as construction material. Gold and silver deposits are occasionally found, but only a few profitable mines exist in the area.
The Southern Territories is under-exploited in terms of their mineral wealth.

The Secondary Sector

The Secondary Sector is concerned with the processing of raw material into intermediary products and/or finished products. This sector also encompasses the construction and maintenance of buildings and utilities like sewer systems. The secondary sector of the nasfaqgian economy is among the most advanced ones in vitubia. A sizeable portion of the nation's population works in the secoondary (and tertiary) sectors, and this appears to be growing even more as workers concentrate into the cities. Around 32% of the nasfaqgian population lives in urban setting, and although not all of these people work in the secondary or tertiary sectors, this number should give some idea on how the economy of the nation is balanced.
The secondary sector of the nasfaqgian economy is far more developped than the primary sector is. Infact, the nasfaqgian primary sector is incapable of fully supplying the raw materials requested by the secondary sector, leading to the industries of the nation having to seek out resources from overseas.

Because reviewing every single area in the secondary sector would be an unfeasible task, I will only review the sector briefly on a general level.

Manufacturing

Manufacturing is exactly what one would assume it to be; Raw material comes in, intermediary or finished product goes out. It is the area of the secondary sector concerned with the processing of raw material into useable goods. These goods are then either further processed into other more finished goods, or sold to consumers and businesses both domestic and overseas.

Light Industry

Light industries are manufacturing processes that are less resource and capital-intensive than some of the other areas of manufacturing. Products produced by light industries are usually made for the end user rather than as intermediary goods meant to be sold to or used by other industries to produce more manufactured goods. Examples of light industry would include bakeries, textile workshops, printing presses, and glassworks.

Food
The native Serene republic cuisine is a mixture of French, Italian, and Southeast Asian style dishes.
The following goods are manufactured by the combined food industry of the Serene republic in significant amounts or in quality hailed as above global average:

Due to the reality of cheesemaking requiring very specific types of bacteria and environments, it would be near impossible to produce an authentic real world cheese in vitubia.
In general the cheeses of the Serene Republic are meant to be a mixture of italian, french, and benelux type cheeses, with some mediterranean and british outliers thrown in.
The types of milk used in nasfaqgian cheeses are in the order of prominence: Cow, Sheep, Water Buffalo, Goat, Other.

Clothing
The manufacture of useable clothing chiefly from domestically produced fabrics, fur, and leather, but also from imported textiles, leathers, and furs. The clothing industry of the Serene Republic is relatively advanced, and cutting edge when it comes to headwear and hats. Nasfaqgian hats are some of the most elaborate and finely crafted ones in all of Vitubia.

Specialty hats:
The very apex of nasfaqgian clothing industry, these hats are made of various expensive and advanced fabrics, some of them chuubanitic in nature. Each hat is made by one of the hatmasters employed by the Dev Council. It may take a hatmaster years of hard work to finish a single hat. The making process of the hats is a closely guarded secret, but it is known that it is both magical and holy in nature, incorporating various rituals and spells known only to the Dev Council. The resulting items are of incredible quality, they are lighter than their size suggests them to be, and supremely comfortable. Many of the hats have subtle magical effects, such as letting out faint scents relating to ther theme, and many have moving parts propelled by chuubanitic glyphs.
These hats are worth more than their weight in gold to the nasfaqgian citizenry. They are an important cultural and religious symbols, and wearing one in public is seen as both an active act of worship, as well as a statement about various sides of one's being, such as emotional state or societal status. Based on the context, a hat may be a sign of love, mourning, respect, and various other things. Valt sometimes give these hats as gifts, and being gifted one of these hats should be taken as a sign of friendship or as a confession of love, either platonic or romantic.
All of the hats are made in the likeness of those worn by deities and mythological figures. There only exists a few approved general designs for theser hats, but each hatmaster makes their hats unique by decoration and material.
The list of currently approved hat designs is as follows:

Printing & Media Reproduction
Printing and storage of information on paper or other materials is an important part of the nasfaqgian economy. Information is seen as an important resource in the Serene Republic, equal and in some situations superior to physical items.
Advancements in printing have allowed for news and information in the form of written script to be spread across the nation quickly and efficiently. The cultural importance of written script has also led to the nation having a very high literacy rate.

The most common languages seen in nasfaqgian printed works are Kat Nol and Holodhennet. Other Ailivian languages are also relatively common, as are some of the least-barbarian Anykarian languages. The least common languages are those from Indiea.

Romantic fiction is the most popular genre of novels in the Serene Republic.
