You're listened in on local rumors, horror stories, and tall tales. They all came with cautionary lessons, but you've learned something else. When it comes to the supernatural, you know what people believe does harm, and you've mostly figured out how to do it yourself. From Kokkuri-san to ushi no koku mairi, if people talk about it, you've heard it, and you might even be able to do it for real.

Kageoka is full of the strangest things, from chinese scams to weird treasures to genuine magic, and you've spent enough time around those things you shouldn't touch to get a sense for where you can find more. Whether it's knowing the one shopkeeper that sells booze to minors, fishing for mermaids, or stealing Shu's underwear, it seems like the less you should have something, the more likely you are to get your hands on it.

Rin is a born nobody. Lacking brains, brawn, and beauty too, not to mention talent or (the talent of) hard work, the only thing she seems to be good at is being present. Not that there's anybody to be present for, since her parents don't expect anything at this point, and her classmates sometimes forget she even exists. Still, even if she's gloomy, she quietly does her best, helping out where she can, without a mean word to say to anybody. If she's known for anything, it's for being a gopher and trader. She even deals in contraband!

-that's her survival mechanism. Even if nobody likes you, at least they might like the things they get from you. Not drawing attention isn't enough to protect you against the fickleness of the crowd. Being on polite terms with everybody before they try to break you down works a lot better. Even if you can't stand somebody, choke that grimace down and offer them a hand. A lot of things scare her, but nothing seems scarier than being alone against everyone else. That fear stops her from reaching out to those loners she pities, but it seems like they've all found somebody else, so her inaction was completely and totally fine all along.

In her free time, she collects old stories and trinkets from around the city, hoping to find something special to rub off on her. The weird, occult, and bizarre interest her, as the furthest things from her and her everyday life, but if you ask, she'll say her hobby is just collecting rocks and plants. She's never seen a ghost, but she'd like to.

Incarnation of 'Yourself'

A noppera-bō isn't even a real yokai, just a mask worn by many before. The idea of that shape was something given to Rin, and drew out strength that she alone could never touch. It's only an 'other self' by technicality. Still, a hopeless loser would stay a hopeless loser if they just relied on a trinket like that, so Rin must have had some dreams left to to give flesh to.

Incarnating into [Hollow Dusk] is Rin's chance to live out her desires and be as rude, weird, and klepto as she wants. Without any accountability, she takes as she pleases and terrorizes the people of Kageoka just to see their screaming faces. The Student Counsel & Co. are enemies of her and the Hyakki Yagyō, so she'll mess with them, but she's not their eternal foe or anything. If anything, she wonders whether them winning might be better...

But then, she'd have to give up the freedom of the new world, the intoxicating feeling of finally stepping out of the crowd. So, to the end, she'll fight as best she can.

Normal Skills

  • Let the shadows dance and pay homage! Lady Darkness is passing by!
• Artistic License Anatomy (Free)
  • Either a blank face or a hollow cavity, it's impossible to tell. Otherwise, she has a very standard humanoid design.
• Magician (Free)
  • She's learned some onmyōdō, enough that her magic can be dangerous to her foes, but she's very much an amateur.
• Raging River
  • A noppera-bō is just a disguise for another yokai - a mujina, a kitsune, a tanuki, or other sort of bakemono. What it'll become in the future is a mystery to everyone.
• Fusion
  • Used on enemies puppeteered with Gaslight to attain [Forced Fusion - Override], letting her temporarily use her foes as her own power! Seeing your friend barreling down at you, radiating hostility from their faceless head, makes for a pretty intimidating magic trick. Of course, she can't use it the normal way, since she doesn't have any trustworthy allies.
• Charge Attack
  • By charging up her powers from the shadows, [Hollow Dusk]s abilities become much more dangerous in an ambush. She's no good in a straight up fight though, so waiting a few minutes to prepare an ambush
• Zona Oscura
  • Necessary for idolon acting alone.
• Absolute Resonance
  • Generic buff is generic.

Abilities

• Shadows 3
  • Draped in shadows, the true shape of Rin's soul is a void of interest. She may as well be the air you breathe. [Hollow Dusk] can hide itself, other enemies for an ambush, or even the loot drops from that boss you just killed so she can steal them, the bitch. Even other idolons struggle to notice.
• Garganta 3
  • The power to rend the boundary between worlds and herald the coming of Yokai. A fitting power for Nurarihyon's left hand woman.
• Ghostmove 3
  • A step and a drop into darkness, a flickering reappearance elsewhere. Already fast enough to seem untouchable, when combined with the power of Shadows, Rin can get anywhere, and evade anything.
• Breakcore 2
  • A power that Rin isn't aware of, having never actually fought physically before.
• Scout 1
  • A sixth sense for bullies, creeps, and pushy people. Oh, and Bleeding Zones, too.

Humanity Lost
Eight candles for the Hour of the Ox. Stained razors, filled paper cups. Eight strikes of the bell. Whispered oaths taken in the light of a dying moon, Something's smile reflected in the sky. Offerings nailed to the Cho shrine's trees. A thin paper face torn apart, revealing the mask beneath.

Rin declared herself an enemy of humanity just recently. Surprisingly little changed.
She doesn't think she's evil now, though she definitely feels less human. Winning, losing, and the fates she'll suffer either way aren't things she troubles herself with. For now, being a fierce and scary yokai haunting the streets of Kageoka is enough. If the price to see the world's secrets was just her soul, so what? She'd pay that in a heartbeat!

Mysterious Bleeding Zone
But just declaring that you're against humanity doesn't really mean much, on it's own.
Rin's been looking into a method to transcend the limits of her species, maybe just out of curiosity.

A certain Bleeding Zone has caught her eye, it's ever-flowing dreamstuff a sign that the logic of the world has really been torn apart for good.
If it can happen once, it can happen again.

The Seven Mysteries
Rumors written down over the course of years seem to be finally showing up.
The slit-mouth woman! The bathroom ghost! Even this white wriggly thing she's never heard of!

This is the sort of creepy stuff Rin lives for.

Drawbacks

Rin isn't showing up every day anymore.
Only a couple of people notice, and Rin wishes they wouldn't.
It started with a period every once in a while, but she's starting to lose days to the streets, and their dark reflection.
It's not like the mundane world is completely awful, some people are nice, and she'd miss them, and where would she get all of her trinkets?

But it just feels so pointless, these days.
