Finally he collapsed on top of her, and their sweaty bodies molded together as one.
A short time later, Franco rolled himself off of Leesha, and they lay side by side in the afterglow. "Leesha, my sweet, I told you that I had some news for you." Franco began.
"Mmm, anything my love. Tell me anything." Leesha cooed.
"My job here in America is almost finished, and I’ll be returning to France."
"When do you have to go?" Leesha asked, some concern in her voice.
"Next month. I will start the moving process. My replacement will come in two weeks to start his training. I just found out last week." He turned towards her, and brushed her now saddened face with his hand.
Leesha was being torn apart inside. She had fallen in love with Franco. He had become her only reason for living the past few weeks after her sister died. He had become her confidant, her rock. Leesha started to cry. "Oh baby, I can’t believe this is happening."
Franco wiped her tears. "I want you to come with me." He blurted. "I want to take you back to my home in the Alps. I will take care of you mi amore."
Leesha looked deep into Franco’s eyes. "What about my husband." She answered. "I couldn’t just up and leave that quickly. He wouldn’t understand. He’d hate me. I’d hate me." She was talking more to herself than Franco at this point. "I couldn’t, could I?" She went back and forth with herself for what seemed like an eternity. "How would I tell him?" She was now scheming for an answer. She’d made up her mind.
Leesha and Franco made love again, and then she showered. She tried to let the fear and agony she was feeling wash away. She didn’t know how, but she wanted, no, she needed to go to France with Franco. She loved him. As she left Franco’s condo, she reached into the glove box to get her cell phone. The light was blinking, and on the screen she saw "one missed call".

After Leesha left, I went upstairs, and put on my bathing suit. I grabbed the cordless phone on my way out the door, and headed towards the pool. Alex and Sally were laying on a couple of the many lounge chairs around the pool, soaking up the sunshine. I chose a chair on the other side of the pool, and put my dark glasses on to shield my eyes from the sun, and to make sure that they couldn’t see what I was looking at. I watched the girls lying in the sun, remembering the events of the night before. They were so young, and so vibrant, so alive. The word young was what stuck in my mind. They were just children, and given the events with Sally a few weeks ago, and with Alex the night before that made me a molester. I started seeing visions of handcuffs, and police, and prison. What had I done?
The sound of the phone ringing snapped me out of my self-loathing. "Hello." I answered.
"Mark?" It was Leesha’s grandmother.
"Hey Granny, how’s things going?" I shouted into the phone. Granny is eighty-four, and starting to lose her faculties, but her mind is still sharp as a tack.
"Not real good here. Is Leesha there?" She sounded a little distraught.
"Uh, no Granny, she’s supposed to be over there."

"Oh wait a minute, I have another call. Bye." And Granny hung up.
"That’s strange." I said aloud to myself. I dialed Leesha’s cell phone number. It rang four times and went to voice mail. I didn’t leave a message. Her phone going to voice mail told me that she wasn’t where she said she was going. I just hoped that she was all right.
I got up from the chair, and headed back into the house. I changed from my swimsuit into some jeans and a t-shirt. I walked back out to the pool, and told Sally that I would be right back.
"Is everything ok?" She asked me.
"Yea sweetie, its ok, I just got something I got to do. I’ll be back shortly."
"Ok, see ya when you get back." She replied.
"You guys don’t stay out here too long, the sun is hot today." I said as I walked back into the house.
I grabbed my keys off of the desk, and headed to the garage. I backed my old pickup out, and headed down the cobble stone driveway. Once on my way to Granny’s house, I kept my eyes peeled for any signs of disturbance along the sides of the road. I took out my cell phone, and called the Sheriff’s non-emergency line and asked if there were any accidents reported along state route ninety-seven. The dispatcher assured me that there hasn’t been any.
"Where could she be?" I wondered to myself, thinking the worst.
I made it all the way to Granny’s house, and to my surprise, Carla’s car was in the driveway. I got out of the truck, and bounded up the stairs of the front porch. Out of breath, I knocked on the front door.
"Is Leesha here?" I asked Carla when the door opened.
"No Mark, this isn’t her weekend. I haven’t seen her."
"This isn’t her weekend?" I sounded perplexed.
"No, Her weekend was last weekend. Charles pulls one, I pull two, and Leesha the other." Carla started looking worried. "Mark, what’s wrong?"
"I thought Leesha had two weekends a month?" I was now wondering why Leesha would lie about this.
"Nope. Where is she Mark?" Carla was getting worried now.
"I don’t know." I said. "But, I’ll find out. Sorry I disturbed you guys. Say hi to Granny for me will ya?" I bounded back down the steps, and got back in the truck.
I didn’t know where else to look, or what she possibly could be doing. How long had she only had one weekend? Why was she lying to me?
I got back to the house, tossed my keys back on the desk, and saw the girls piled up on the couch watching TV.
"Anyone call?" I asked. I was pretty sure what the answer was.
"Nope nobody. Did you get everything done?"
I stood there looking in the direction of the TV, but not really seeing it. I was lost in thought about where my wife was, and what she was doing, and even with whom.
"Uncle Mark?" Sally whistled to get my attention.
"Uh… Yea… What?" I stammered.
"Did you get everything done?" She asked me again.
"Uh, yea honey, I got it all done." I said as I turned towards my desk.
I sat down in my desk chair, and powered up my laptop computer. I got online, and checked the bank account. It was all still there, like it was supposed to be. I checked my work e-mail, my personal e-mail. There was nothing from her recently. I looked at the clock, and she had been gone for just over three hours now. I was stumped. I didn’t know what happened to her, or where she was. The knowledge of what the schedule was with her grandmother was disturbing.
"I’ll find out soon enough when she gets home. If she gets home." I thought.
The rest of the afternoon went by uneventfully. Don and Brenda came and picked up Alex at about five thirty. I made some chicken for dinner, and Sally and I ate. About seven thirty, Sally announced to me that she was tired, and was going to her room to read, and probably fall asleep. Leesha should be home by eight fifteen or so.
Promptly at eight fifteen, just like she’d done every other time she had to sit with her grandmother, I heard the Caddy come up the drive way. I got up from my desk, and went to the garage door through the kitchen to meet her. I opened up the door, and saw her checking herself out in the mirror. She turned her head, and her face turned white when she saw me.
I walked out of the door, and let it shut behind me. Leesha turned off the engine to the Cadillac, and stepped out.
"How’s granny doing?" I asked her.
"She’s just fine. Griping about one thing or another as usual. How are you guys doing?" She asked me, tilting her head upwards for a kiss.
I just stood my ground, and looked down at her. "I know you weren’t at Granny’s today Leesha." I almost yelled at her. "Where the fuck were you?" She put her head down, and took a step away from me.
"We need to talk." She said, pushing past me, as she went inside the house.
She put her purse down on the kitchen counter, and turned around. "I’ve fallen in love with someone Mark." The news hit me like a brick.
I sat down at the kitchen table with a thud. I put my elbows on the table and my face in my hands. "The French guy from the bookstore?" I asked.
"You knew about that?" She sounded shocked.
I really didn’t know that she’d been fucking him, but I did know there was an attraction there. "I do now." I said. "How long has this been going on?" I asked, not sure if I wanted to know the answer.
"Since about two months before I quit the bookstore." Her head was down in shame. "He makes me happy Mark. Not that you don’t, but just in different ways." She looked up at me, a tear running down her face. "You hate me now, don’t you?"
"I stood up from the table, and walked in her direction. "I don’t hate you baby." I managed to say without screaming at her. I put my arms around her, and gave her a hug. She hugged me back tight, and let out a big sigh. I lowered my head down and whispered in her ear. "You can have the car, just get the fuck out of my house, tonight." I said it very calmly. I didn’t shout, or scream. I hugged her tight, then released her, and walked away headed out of the kitchen. I stopped just before entering my den office. "Grab some clothes for now, the lawyers can figure the rest out later. Goodbye Leesha." I walked into my home office and closed the door.
A few minutes later, she opened the door to my office. I was sitting at my desk, staring at my laptop, not really doing anything. "I said goodbye to Sally. I didn’t go into a lot of detail. But I told her we’d talk later. I’ll send for her when I get where I’m going if you want me to."
"We’ll be fine." I told her. "We’ll get all of that sorted out with the rest of the stuff. Can you close the door on your way out?" I said rather coldly.
She didn’t respond, just walked away with her suitcase rolling behind her.

I sat at my desk, thinking about what had just happened. My wife had just left me for another man. A slew of emotions reeled through me. I was angry, I was very angry. I was also hurt. I knew things between us werent perfect, but I thought she was a lot happier with me than that. I was confused, at what I did wrong. I was successful, I kept in shape, I was loving, and I took care of her. Or, at least I thought I did. I started to cry. Tears were streaming down my face. I was so sure about us. We were going to be together forever. I dont know how long Id been sitting there thinking. "What did I do wrong?" I looked up towards the ceiling, as if to ask God.
"You didn’t do anything wrong." It was Sallys voice.
I tried to compose myself. "How long have you been there?" I asked, sniffling, and reaching for a tissue.
"Not long." She walked closer to my desk. "I don’t want to go to France Uncle Mark." She said walking around the back of my chair.
"France?" I looked over my shoulder just as she hugged me from behind. "Who said anything about France?"
"Aunt Leesha said that she’d send for me when she got settled in France." She put her head down on my shoulder. "She tried to tell me that I’d like this Franco guy. I already don’t like him, because he hurt you. Don’t make me go Uncle Mark. Please?"
"Nobody’s going to France sweetie, well, accept your Aunt Leesha." I put my hand on hers. "We’ll be ok." I said, trying to convince myself more than her.
"I know we will." She kissed me on the cheek. "I’m going back to bed, unless you want to talk?" She asked.
"No, sweetie, I’ll be ok. I got some things to do for work tomorrow, and I need to take care of some other things. ‘Night sweetie." I tried to gather my resolve for my next task. Sally walked out of the den, and I got to work.

I opened up my bank website and noticed that Leesha had stopped by an ATM when she left the house. She took out the limit, four hundred dollars, and then stopped to get gas for her car. I clicked on the "Make Transfer Button" and transferred all of the money out of the checking account, except a thousand dollars, into an account that wasn’t a joint account that I’d set up for gifts, and anything else that I didn’t want anyone else to have access to. The thousand dollars I left in there was so that she wouldn’t suspect that I emptied the account, and also to make sure that she didn’t clean the account out herself. I suspected that she was going to get half of everything anyway, but I didn’t want her to take it right now. I had my doubts as to whether or not she would actually clear the account, but I didn’t know anything about this Franco guy. Once I was reasonably sure that I’d secured my finances, I headed upstairs to go to bed.
I woke up the next morning to the alarm clock buzzing. Out of habit, I walked around the bed quickly to hit the snooze button, then crawled back into bed, and scooted myself back, looking for Leesha. To my surprise, there was somebody there. The form slid in behind me in spoon fashion, and put an arm around my waist. I woke up with a start, and turned over to see Sally lying next to me. I got up fast, and put on my robe. The motion I made woke her up.
"Good morning." She said sleepily.
I rubbed my eyes to make sure I was seeing what I was seeing. She was wearing a nightshirt that had Mickey Mouse on the front. She kicked the covers off of herself. "What are you doing in here?" I asked, trying to contain my embarrassment.
"I had a bad dream, so I came in here to sleep with you." She looked at me with those puppy dog eyes. "You don’t mind do you?"
"Just wake me up, and tell me next time so I can get some clothes on." I directed. "You’re not a kid anymore. It’s not right for you to be sleeping with a forty year old man."
"Ok, Sorry." She pleaded. "I won’t do it anymore. I was just scared, that’s all." She got up out of the bed, and stomped out of the bedroom.
Then the thought hit me. I put my hand on my forehead. "What am I going to do with Sally?" I asked myself. Leesha usually was at home, so I didn’t even think about someone being here to stay with her. She was sixteen, but still. She didn’t really have any friends, or anything to do all day, but think up stuff that would probably get her in trouble. I would have to stay home from work I guess.
I reached for the phone on the bedside table, and dialed Alan’s number. "Morning bud." I said.
"What the fuck’s wrong with you? You sound like shit." I could tell he was in his car, probably on his way to work.
"The story is long and painful buddy, and I really don’t want to get into it now." I let out a sigh. "Is anyone coming into town in the next few days? Anyone important I mean."
"Not that I know of pal. Is everything ok?" He sounded concerned.
"No, not really, I’m going to need to be out of the office a few days. Can you take my calls, and let me know of anything important going on?" I replied.
There was a pause. "Sure bud, I’ll take care of everything. You just consider yourself on vacation. You need anything?"
"Just a little time, and a good…" I stopped my sentence short. I really didn’t want to get into it right then, and I knew that if my best friend thought I needed him, he’d rush right over. Then, nothing would get done at work. "I’ll be ok bud. Thanks a lot. I owe ya one."
"Oh nonsense, what are friends for? I’ll take care of it bud." He reassured me.
I hung up the phone, and sat down on the bed. I didn’t know if I should just climb in and make the world go away, or if I should get dressed and seek legal counsel for the impending divorce. I decided that I should probably get up and face the facts. Leesha was going to divorce me, and there was nothing I could do to stop it. What’s done is done.
I got dressed in some shorts, and a golf shirt, and headed downstairs. Sally was sitting at the kitchen table staring at a grapefruit.
"Hey kiddo, good news. I’m staying home today." I put my hand on her back, and kissed her on top of the head.
"I didn’t mean to make you mad this morning." She was almost crying.
"Oh sweetie, you didn’t make me mad. I just wasn’t expecting it, that’s all." I sat down in the chair across from her. "Look kiddo, all of this stuff with Leesha is kinda making me nuts right now." I put my hand under her chin, and made her look up at me. "I’ll be ok, and back to normal before you know it. I didn’t mean to jump on you this morning." I wiped a tear from her eye.
"I just don’t know what’s going to happen to me." She started to cry. "My mom died, then Aunt Leesha fucks around on you. She’s moving to France, and I don’t want to go to France." She put her head back down.
I scooted over to the chair next to her, and put my arm around her shoulder. "I don’t think anyone can make you go to France if you don’t want to. I’m going to call my lawyer today, and I’ll try to make sure you don’t have to."
"I want to stay here with you. I feel safe here." She wrapped her arms around me, and leaned against my shoulder.
"Then that’s what will happen." I smiled down at her, and wiped a tear from her face. "You eat, then get dressed, and we’ll get out of here for a while. I got some errands to run, and we may have to go to the attorney’s office, so don’t put on anything too short ok?" I chuckled trying to sound cheerful, even though I just wanted to scream.
"Ok." She wiped her face, and started to eat the grapefruit in front of her.
I went to my den, and looked up my attorney’s phone number in the Rolodex. I looked up at the clock. "Ten after nine, he should be there by now." I picked up the phone and dialed the number. "Chet?" I said. "Mark Davis here."
"Hey Mark, long time no see. What’s up?" He asked.
"I’m probably gonna need your help. Leesha’s divorcing me."
"Oh no, I hate hearing that." He said in a caring tone.
"Well things happen." I said, "But I’ve got a little complication. We took over guardianship of our niece. She’s Leesha’s late sister’s daughter. Leesha wants to take her to France with her, but she doesn’t want to go." I tried to put everything in a nutshell for him knowing how busy he is.
"How old is the niece?" He didn’t even flinch. Maybe this wasn’t going to be that difficult.
"She’s sixteen. She really wants to stay here with me." I saw Sally come down the stairs and motioned for her to come into the den.
"Hmm…Ok, I got a few Ideas. Can you come by the office today?" He finally said.
"Sure. We’ll both be there. Thanks Chet." I said, feeling a little relieved that this wasn’t going to be as big a deal as I thought.
"Don’t thank me yet pal. Wait until you get the bill." He laughed.
"I can’t wait." I scoffed.
"I’m here all day, so anytime is good for me."
"Ok Chet, we’ll be there in a little while. Bye now." I hung up the phone and looked at Sally standing before me.
"Good news?" She asked.
"Might be, Chet’s working on it. He says he has a few ideas." I got up, and walked around the desk. "That’s a cute outfit." I mentioned, passing her. "Let me get my shoes on, and we’ll go."
I glanced back at Sally who was still facing away from me. She really had a perfect ass in those shorts. I got my shoes on, and grabbed my keys.
We got into the pickup truck, and I started the engine while the garage door was opening up. I backed out of the garage, and headed for the city.
It took almost an hour to get to Chet’s office, and we were both quiet almost the entire way. I pulled the truck into a parking spot outside of the massive office building, and put a few coins in the parking meter. Once on the thirty-fourth floor, we found Chet’s office with no problem.
"Hi Stacy." I exclaimed.
"Mark, I haven’t seen you in forever." She got up, and walked around the desk to give me a hug.
"Not since the big deal with G.E. huh? It has been a while." I broke the embrace, and put my hand on the small of Sally’s back. "Stacy, this is Sally, my niece. Sally, this is Stacy."
Once the introductions were complete. Stacy motioned for us to go in Chet’s office "He’ll be right in. He’s talking to one of the partners." She sat back down at her desk. "It was nice meeting you Sally." She said as she was picking up the ringing phone.
Chet walked in a few minutes later. "Mark, old buddy. How ya doin?" he reached out his hand, and we shook. "This must be your niece?" he said already extending his hand.
"Yep, this is Sally." I introduced.
"Great, sit down you guys." He went back around his desk, and sat in his chair. "I got a few questions. When you guys took over guardianship, did you sign or did Leesha sign, or both?"
My face lit up because I knew where he was going with it. "I signed it. Leesha wasn’t even there."
Chet looked directly at Sally. "There ya go pretty lady." He pointed in my direction. "You’re all his, legally." He clasped his hands in triumph. "Next problem?"
Sally smiled wide, and moved to the edge of her seat. "Just like that? I don’t have to go with Leesha to France?" It was the first time I’d ever heard her use Leesha’s name without putting "Aunt" in front of it.
"Not if you don’t want to. Now if this thing goes to court, the judge will ask you where you want to go. You’re sixteen, and that makes you old enough to make the decision." He put his feet on his desk. "Now if Leesha pushes the issue, I’ll argue that your Uncle Mark here, has sole guardianship, and in this state, that is indisputable if only one party signs the guardianship document." Chet looked rather proud of his self, and put his hands behind his head. "There’s also emancipation, if that falls through."
"What’s that?" Sally asked.
Chet began to explain. "Since your folks died, and basically left you without parents, and you’re now sixteen years old. In this state, you can be what’s called emancipated. This means that legally, you’d be an adult. Now there are some pro’s and con’s to this, so we really only want to do that if it’s necessary."
Sally simply nodded her head and sat back in her chair, satisfied that she didn’t have to go to France.
"Sally, could you give your Uncle Mark and me a few minutes please?" Chet asked. "There’s a soda machine down the hall. Stacy can show you where it is."
Sally nodded her head and stood up. "Sure. I can do that. I’ll just wait outside till you’re done." She touched me on the shoulder as she went past.
Chet grabbed a stack of papers on his desk, and tossed them in my direction. "Leesha’s already been busy." He said, pointing to the papers. "These were faxed over about fifteen minutes before you got here."
I picked up the stack of papers, and saw "DAVIS VS. DAVIS" typed across the top. "She already filed?" I asked in amazement.
"Yep." Chet said leaning back in his chair. "I gotta call her lawyer, but it looks like she’s not asking for anything." He winked at me.
"Nothing?" I asked back.
"According to all of this, she wants to be let back into the house, escorted if you desire, to get her clothes and a few mementos, and that’s it."
"This Franco fuck must be loaded if she doesn’t want anything." I commented flipping through the pages. "Can you call her lawyer now?" I tossed the stack back in his direction. "Could this be over today?"
"For all practical purposes, yes. That is, of course, if there aren’t any problems where Sally’s concerned. She wasn’t mentioned in the papers, and Leesha’s already signed them. It’ll take a day or two to get things through the courts, but yea, it will be over."
"Call him." I directed. "Lets get this over with."
I heard Chet talking with her attorney. He said yes, and no a lot, and at one point gave me the thumbs up sign. He talked briefly about Sally, and then winked at me.
"Ok, I’ll let him know that she’s going to come over." He made the ok sign with his thumb and forefinger, and covered up the phone.
"Can she go over there now and get her stuff?" He asked me. I gave him the ok for her to do that. There really wasn’t anything there that I wanted that couldn’t be replaced She could have just about everything, just not all of my money, and not Sally.
"You too. If only they were all this easy." He tossed the papers back in my direction, then handed me a pen. "He’s signing them now, and I’ll fax you copies, and have a courier drop them off at your office." He hung up the phone. "Dirt bag." He mumbled under his breath.
I signed the papers, and gave them back to him. "What was said about Sally?"
"She was in the office, and told her lawyer that she would only take her if she wanted to go with her, but she wasn’t going to force her."
"So that’s it?" I questioned, thinking that it couldn’t possibly be that easy to get divorced after eight years of marriage. "We’re divorced?"
"Welcome to the land of irreconcilable differences." He said getting up with the papers. He left the office momentarily "Sally, you can come back in now dear, we’re done." I heard him say. Sally followed him into the office. "You guys go out and celebrate, or whatever and I’ll get you copies in the mail once I get the final decree. Leesha is headed to the house now, so you may want to be gone for a few hours, unless, you’re worried about what she might take."
"I’m not worried about it. Believe it or not, I still trust her." I managed a little smile, as the gravity of what had happened today sunk in. "You ready kiddo?" I asked Sally. She grabbed a hold of my hand, and we left the office.
Once we were back in the pickup, she leaned over and kissed me on the cheek. "What was that for?" I turned towards her and asked.
She smiled, and gave me another kiss on the lips. "The first one was for wanting me."
"And the second?" I asked putting the truck in reverse.
"The second was for WANTING me." She bit her bottom lip, then scooted over into the center of the seat to be closer to me.
