Kingdom of Selenium during the Times of Pomerlane

The Kingdom of Selenium is one of the most powerful and warlike states in Ninisani. Around 600 years, these mysterious people migrated to Ninisani and conquered vast parts of the Kingdom of Feeshland, at one point destroying the Kingdom completely before Pomeranius defeated them at the Battle of Vyborg. The Kingdom would be the first state to break away from Pomeranius' Empire after his death and has regained its status as a major player in continental politics.

In recent years, it has become the de-facto hegemon over much of Southern and Western Ninisani, and has regularly intervened in the politics of Pomerania and Eliria for its own benefit. As recently as 1072, it installed another claimant onto the throne of Eliria. Unfortunately, in fighting in recent years in Selenium has limited them somewhat, but as of 1102, the Kingdom has been reunified and the Royal Family has reasserted itself over its nobles (thanks in part to Pomerlane killing the Prince of Danevirke, whose domain was absorbed into the Royal Estates as he had no heir). The current King of Selenium is Magnus VIII Firebreath. He has ruled for 10 years now, and plans to strength Royal Authority even more during his reign. He is a ruthless but fair ruler, known for his prowess with the pen as much as the sword.

As a militarized society based upon martial virtues and above all, victory in battle, Selenium has been jokingly called an Army with a State. The King or Queen is expected to lead the Royal Army into battle, but it is not uncommon for powerful lords to wage war or raid neighboring states for their own benefit. The pride of their army is the legendary Dragoons, who are known to be prolific horsemen, that are just as deadly on foot. Whether they be using their carbines, sabers, or lances; they rightfully strike fear into their enemies. The rest of the army is made up of powerful lancers, pikemen and arquebuisers, drawn from the vassal states of the Kingdom. Mercenaries were also used to supplement the army in need, but thanks to Pomerlane, this has been made by Royal Decree to be illegal and that all mercenaries in the land will be executed if captured. Novel inventions such as the contraption known as "Dragon's Breath" and "Fire Bombs" also make up the arsenal of Selenium but are closely guarded state secrets.

The heart of the Kingdom is it's capital at Kalmar, a city built on a hill near the center of the realm. From Kalmar, the King of Selenium biyearly makes a journey to Mount Ember, to consult with the Dragons that live at top the mountain and present treasure, often tribute from other states like Feeshland which pays massive tribute to Selenium or plunder from raids. It is said that so long as the Monarch keeps the Dragons happy, Selenium will never fall another nation ever again. "Slaves, we shall be never more" is the state motto.
