Background:
The Otanashi clan are the original rulers of the Land of Rice Fields, the home of the Village Hidden in the Sound. They are a proud and powerful Ninja Clan, using their immensely powerful Sound Style Jutsus to act as spies and informants for all 5 great nations, as well as many of the lesser nations in the known ninja world. Hibiki is the Scion of the Otanashi, son of the patriarch and as a result, the one who would one day take charge as the head of the clan. Hibiki was raised from a very young age to keep the ideals and traditions of the clan alive, trained in their techniques and various methods of information gathering.
However, Hibiki lacked the cruelty and maliciousness needed to make use of the Otanashi Sound techniques to their fullest extent. He would cringe when nails and teeth were pulled from prisoners to extract information, and had only killed 80 people by his 12th birthday - a woefully low number for his clan, especially since they were all provided to him. Many in the clan looked down on the Otanashi scion for his perceived weakness, some even suggesting that the second in line, Hibiki's cousin, should be groomed as the next patriarch instead.
Hibiki would often sneak out of the Otanashi compound during the night, visiting the forest that surrounded them. The forest was filled with dangerous beasts, but with the Otanashi clan's Hypersonic Mind Waves technique, Hibiki spoke with them and treated them as his first real friends. He loved to explore the forest, where he would collect flowers and play with his animal companions. But one day, the boy heard a beautiful singer, deep in the woods. He got as close as he could, but the singer was atop a tall cliff, and he could not see her. Every time she finished singing, he would applaud her performance, calling out for her to continue. He would converse with the singer every night from then on, praising her performance and asking about her. But every time he requested to meet with her, the singer would quickly refuse and leave, ending their nightly visit early.
This continued for two weeks, until finally, Hibiki decided to meet the woman face-to-face. He climbed the cliff as she sang, reaching the top. Unfortunately, the Singer he had longed to meet was no human, but rather a demon in the shape of a man-eating wolf. She had enjoyed the boy's company and praise, and had grown fond of him over their short time together. But when the boy appeared before her, she quickly moved to cover the boy's eyes, afraid that if he saw who she really was, he would refuse to visit her any longer. She accidentally sliced the boy's eyes, blinding him and making him fall - nearly killing him. Ashamed, the Wolf would form a contract with the unconscious boy, allowing him to summon her using a magic flute. She then took the boy to the edge of the Otanashi's compound, leaving him to be discovered by the soldiers.
Hibiki was disgraced after his disfigurement - even his father was losing faith in his ability to lead the clan, giving Hibiki's cousin the opportunity to claim the title of heir. Hibiki was confined in the dungeon of the Otanashi clan compound for three nights, until the arrival of a recruiter from the Village Hidden in the Moon gave them a perfect opportunity to be rid of Hibiki without upsetting the Patriarch. Hibiki would be sold to the recruiter, acting as a 'spy' for the Otanashi in the foreign land. He would likely die as a ninja with no sight, and even if he returned one day, it would likely be after the new heir had attained the throne.
Personality:
Hibiki is a kind, caring young man, far too soft for the difficulties of a Ninja. Despite the loss of his vision and the betrayal of his clan, he seems optimistic and naively childish at the opportunity to 'mingle with commoners' - he has even started up a small garden near the school, where he spends much of his free time. He enjoys sharing the flowers he grows with the other students, and often brings a single flower or fruit for his teacher before a lesson.
Hibiki is woefully poor in Taijutsu and physical fights, preferring nonviolent solutions to any problem that he faces. There is no reason to kill all the guards in a compound if you can simply sneak past them and steal what you need, after all. However, despite his seeming pacifism, he has been exposed to incredibly brutal and gruesome scenes from a young age including torture, the murder of innocents, and horrific disfigurement - all acts his Clan perpetrated to maintain power and extract information from those around them. While Hibiki would never commit such acts himself, he is unphased by them, and will often make comments that shock or disturb his classmates - for example, fondly remembering an uncle, before mentioning that he attempted to assassinate Hibiki and was executed via waist chop.
Hibiki has been raised in one of the wealthier clans in the ninja world, and as a result, has a fairly distorted view of the world around him. For instance, he might order five-layered chakra-infused plum cake as a dessert in the cafeteria, and merchants faint in shock when they realize his robes are worth more than most people's houses. He doesn't seem to mind the lower quality of the items and living conditions around him, as even basic and common tasks and objects are new and exotic to him - some less reputable and lazy classmates might use this aspect of Hibiki's personality to trick him into doing their chores.
Hibiki's condition has nowhere near as much of an effect on him thanks to his Sensory Arts and Sound Style jutsus, allowing him to echolocate and navigate purely through sound. However he is quite depressed over the loss of his vision, as he can no longer read his favorite poems and books, or appreciate the beauty of the flowers he grows. He typically relies on a small owl that he has domesticated using the Hypersonic Mind Waves in order to read class material and books to him, though a classmate offering to take this role would be quick to earn his friendship. Hibiki's greatest wish is to regain his vision. He could then search for and finally meet the singer whom he idolized - unaware that he summons her to fight for him via his flute.
