Asus Q407IQ experience

Some mixed subjective and objective observations about the ASUS Q407IQ from codeHusky.

  • left fn should just be a big control since fn key on the right serves that purpose fine and fn isn't needed for typing
  • the action row on the right misaligns the keyboard from the touchpad which contributes to misclicks while typing
  • the mousepad is too wide for being as poorly designed as it is. while it's nice to have a big, glass-like touchpad, if the palm rejection can't handle things like palms resting on it while typing, it's bad.
  • the metal bezel along the top looks nice in renders but the slight flexes and imperfections in it make it look like a cheap toy
  • the brushed finish on the metal looks terrible
  • the ` key is really tiny
  • the key caps are invisible in certain common lighting situations inside, and most cases outside
  • if you accidentally hit the power button you instantly put the pc to sleep
  • the fans can bug out after sleep mode and cause constant high fan speeds which is absolutely obnoxious
  • there's no usb-c charging, which normally i wouldn't complain about but for how shitty this machine is otherwise, it should have that at least.
  • keyboard layout still sucks
  • wifi signal is terrible. my t480 and samsung galaxy s9 in the same spot got an almost perfect connection whereas the zenbook got like 2 bars and would occasionally drop out. this is due to the keyboard deck antennas instead of just embedding them in the lcd bezel like a sane person
  • the ergolift makes the whole laptop slippery on tables due to the catclaw looking rubber bumpers, which makes it annoying while typing if your on a particularly smooth surface.
  • the ergolift lifts the keyboard up from a flat position which, counter to the name, is not good for ergonomics.
  • if you try to do anything with the io while the laptop is on anything but fabric it will slide around
  • the bottom panel is a pain to get off because adhered rubber feet cover two of the screws along the hinge. these should have cutouts to just show the screws.
  • the main system fan's intake is covered by a piece of plastic.
  • the thermals suck, but not necessarily because of the blocked intakes. the machine throttles itself down to hit and maintain a certain temperature to avoid bringing the LCD above operating temperature (the cooler blows directly onto the LCD). this wouldn't be an issue if this laptop had normal hinges, but since ASUS needed to put their shitty hinge design in this laptop, it sucks.
  • the MX350 is neutered to the point of being almost worse than just using the igpu of the renoir apu, and if you have a 4700u model, it's for sure outperforming the dgpu.
  • sustained loads, gpu only runs at 4 watts and cpu only runs at 9 watts.
  • lcd assembly allows for a lot of wiggle room for the LCD panel, which resulted in my unit's LCD being shifted so far in one direction that you can see metal behind it.
  • ASUS misadvertises the bezels, which are closer to 4.2mm compared to the 2.9mm or whatever they advertise them as.
