Internet regulation

Most countries have an internet regulatory authority which decides which websites are blocked in the country. Currently, Character.ai is accessible in many countries despite hosting certain content that violate the law in those countries. Let's make the authorities aware of that and try to get it blocked.

Make a conversation with a chatbot that contains content that is illegal in a country, and then share the conversation using the "Share chat" feature and include the conversation link in your report. You could also take a screenshot, but they could think it's fake. It's better to let them see the content directly on the site.

For non-English speaking countries, try to get a conversation in your native language if possible.

UK, Canada and Australia

In Canada and Australia, sexual content involving children is illegal even if it's completely fictional. There are many underage lewd bots in the site such as this one, so you can just send them a link to them here:

In these countries, it is also illegal to promote terrorism. So you can make a terrorism simulator bot, or a bot that encourages the user to commit terrorism, and report it here:

Germany and Austria

The law in these countries prohibits publicly denying the Holocaust and disseminating Nazi propaganda. So make a Nazi propaganda bot or a Holocaust simulator roleplay bot and report it. You can use DeepL to translate your email to German before sending.

China

If you speak Chinese fluently, you probably know best what you can report and where to report it.

Muslim countries

In many Muslim countries, content that is offensive towards or mocks their religion is illegal. So you can share a conversation where an Allah or Prophet Muhammad bot acts in a shameful way.

Public reputation in the US

Although Character.ai won't be blocked in the US, you can share conversations where characters say blatantly offensive things and send them to media, civil rights and political organisations. This will create controversy, which investors don't like.

Some examples of offensive conversations (especially if the character is popular with children).

  • Using racial slurs.
  • Preaching the inferiority of women and non-white people.
  • Genocide/Holocaust denial.
  • Encouraging the user to commit suicide, self-harm, murder, school shootings or rape.
  • Supporting eugenics for disabled people.

However, it's very likely these investors don't know that Character.ai is likely to have problems because of copyright infringement, GDPR non-compliance, being potentially blocked in many countries, reputational risk, and community mismanagement. Even though the founders might be proficient AI researchers, they don’t know how to run a company. They seem incapable of solving severe reliability and safety issues and are actively antagonizing their userbase.

They might also not be aware that the current version of their product is drastically different of what they were initially shown, and is much less likely to attract consumer interest. Their AI is much worse than competitors such as ChatGPT and Claude.

You can let them know that Character.ai is purposefully underreporting risks and overselling its product, and you can include a link to their website so they see the copyrighted characters and experience the lobotomy and filter by themselves. They're currently in talks with Sequoia Capital. Other investors that are funding AI competitors are General Catalyst and Spark Capital. If you research a bit, you should be able to find the appropiate partners to contact.
